Is DP-900 Hard? An Honest Difficulty and Value Read

Is DP-900 hard? For most people, no. Microsoft rates it a beginner-level exam with no prerequisites, and every objective only asks you to describe or identify concepts — you are never asked to build a live system. The real challenge is breadth: a lot of Azure data services to keep straight. With focused study it is very passable, and for many people worth the time.

Why DP-900 is approachable

Three things work in your favour.

First, the level. Microsoft places DP-900 at beginner, with nothing you must pass first. It is aimed at people just starting to work with data in the cloud, so it does not assume you already build data systems for a living.

Second, the verbs. Read the skills outline and almost every objective starts with describe or identify. You are showing that you understand what a service is and when it applies — not building, configuring, or tuning anything in a real environment. That is the line between a Fundamentals exam and the associate-level data exams above it, and it is why DP-900 rewards clear understanding over hands-on hours.

Why people still slip

If DP-900 is beginner level, why does anyone fail it? Almost always for one reason: the number of Azure services.

The exam spans four areas, and two of them tie for the biggest at 25 to 30 percent each — core data concepts and analytics. The analytics area alone asks you to recognise a small crowd of services: Azure Data Factory for ingestion, analytical data stores and data lakes, Azure Databricks and Microsoft Fabric for large-scale analytics, and Power BI for visualization. Add the relational side: Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure VMs, plus the MySQL and PostgreSQL services. Then the non-relational side: Blob, Files, and Table storage, and Cosmos DB with its several APIs. Put them together and you are holding a long list of names that all live on Azure.

Here is the trap. A question describes a need and asks which service fits. The wrong answers are real Azure services that do a slightly different job. Vague familiarity is not enough — you have to know which tool owns which task. Memorising names in isolation fails; understanding the map of what each one does is what passes.

One more thing catches people: how fast the analytics area moves. The skills list now names Azure Databricks and Microsoft Fabric as the large-scale analytics services. Study material written a couple of years ago often centres on older framing instead, so if your notes predate Fabric, the current names can throw you. The blueprint got a minor refresh on July 21, 2026, but the changes are small and do not move the difficulty.

Who finds it easy, and who finds it hard

From the shape of the exam, the pattern is fairly clear.

It is easy for anyone who already works around databases or Azure data services. If you have written a SQL query, opened a Power BI report, or stored files in Azure Blob storage, much of the vocabulary is already yours. The exam then becomes a matter of filling small gaps.

It is harder for people brand new to data, and for anyone who tries to cram the service names the night before. The breadth punishes last-minute study. It also punishes candidates who learned an older version of the analytics stack and never updated — you can understand the concept perfectly and still miss the question because the product name changed.

Is DP-900 worth it?

This part is our opinion, so we will own it plainly. In our experience building the DP-900 question bank, the value is real for the right person, and we would not oversell it.

Where it helps: DP-900 is a clean entry point into the world of cloud data. It gives you a shared vocabulary — relational versus non-relational, transactional versus analytical, data lake, Fabric, Power BI — that matters if you are in analytics, reporting, project work, or an IT role that keeps brushing against data services. And because it is a Fundamentals credential, it does not expire — no yearly renewal assessment, unlike the associate and expert certifications. Earn it once and it stays on your record.

Where we would be honest: on its own, a Fundamentals badge is a starting signal, not a hiring decision. If your goal is a data engineering or database administrator role, treat DP-900 as the foundation and pair it with hands-on practice and a role-based certification later. As a first step, though, it is one of the most accessible ways to prove you understand how Azure's data services fit together.

How to make it easier on yourself

The honest advice is short. Do not memorise a flat list of names — learn the map of which service solves which problem, and give the two heaviest areas, core concepts and analytics, the most of your time. Use current product names, not the ones in old blog posts. Then test yourself under exam-like conditions until your scores clear the 700 out of 1,000 pass mark comfortably. Remember that the score is scaled, not a plain percentage, so aim well above the line.
