DP-900 Practice Questions: Question Types, Examples, and Where to Practise

DP-900 keeps its question styles simple: mostly multiple choice and multiple response, with some interactive items such as drag-and-drop ordering or dropdown selections, inside a 45-minute exam. Fundamentals exams skip the case studies used at associate level. The best practice is answering original, sourced questions in a test player, not memorising leaked dumps.

What question styles does DP-900 use?

Microsoft does not print a full format list for DP-900. The certification page does say the exam may include interactive components, and it points you to a free exam sandbox where you can try the styles before test day. That sandbox uses the same interface as the real exam, so we recommend opening it.

From building fundamentals-level banks, here are the styles you should be ready for:

• Single-answer multiple choice — pick the one correct option from a list.
• Multiple response — pick every correct option; the item tells you how many to choose.
• Drag-and-drop / build-list — put steps in the right order, or match items to categories (for example, matching each Azure service to the job it does).
• Dropdown / hotspot — complete a sentence or a small table by choosing the right term for each blank, or answer a set of Yes/No statements.

What you will not meet on DP-900 is a case study. That is the long shared scenario, read once and followed by several linked questions, that some associate-level exams use. DP-900 is a beginner exam. It checks whether you can recognise and describe data concepts and Azure data services, not whether you can build a live data platform.

One more thing worth knowing, from the study guide: most items cover features that are generally available, and preview features appear only when they are in common use. So you can practise the mainstream services and skip the edge cases.

Two original DP-900 example questions

Example 1 — single-answer multiple choice. A retailer stores product reviews as JSON documents. Each review can carry a different set of fields, and no fixed table structure is enforced. Which kind of data best describes these reviews?

• A. Structured data
• B. Semi-structured data
• C. Unstructured data
• D. Relational data

Answer: B. JSON documents with flexible fields are the classic case of semi-structured data — there is some organising structure (the keys), but no fixed schema every record must follow. Structured data lives in fixed rows and columns; unstructured data, such as an image or audio file, carries no field structure at all.

Example 2 — drag-and-drop matching. Match each Azure service to the job it is built for.

Answer: Azure SQL Database → a managed relational database; Azure Cosmos DB → a globally distributed non-relational database; Azure Data Factory → data ingestion and pipelines; Microsoft Power BI → data visualization and reporting. The exam rewards knowing which service owns which task — a theme across the whole blueprint.

Why a test player beats memorising dumps

Some sites sell "DP-900 practice questions" that are really dumps — live exam items someone memorised after sitting the test, then leaked. Avoid them, for two reasons.

First, dumps train recognition, not understanding. You learn one exact wording, so the moment a word changes you are stuck. DP-900 items are written to check whether you actually grasp a concept, and understanding is what carries you through a reworded question.

Second, leaked content puts the credential you are paying for at risk, and it rots fast. Exams change: Microsoft refreshed DP-900 on July 21, 2026, and a dump written for the old blueprint quietly goes wrong.
