How to Study for DP-900: A Weighted Study Plan

How do you study for DP-900? Match your hours to the exam's weightings. Core data concepts and analytics are tied as the biggest areas at 25–30% each, so they earn the most time; non-relational data is the smallest at 15–20%. Work through the four free official learning paths in order, then test yourself with practice questions until your scores hold steady.
Put your hours where the marks are
The single biggest mistake with a fundamentals exam is spreading your time evenly. DP-900 is not weighted evenly, so your study should not be either. Microsoft splits the exam into four scored areas, each with its own percentage band:
- Core data concepts — 25–30%. Tied for the largest area, and the foundation everything else sits on.
- Analytics workloads — 25–30%. The other heavyweight. It carries the newest material, including Microsoft Fabric and Power BI.
- Relational data on Azure — 20–25%. A solid fifth of the exam: SQL, normalization, and the Azure SQL services.
- Non-relational data on Azure — 15–20%. The smallest area — Azure Storage and Cosmos DB.
Notice that the top two areas — core concepts and analytics — together make up more than half the exam. A plan that gives them more than half your study time is already aligned with how you will be scored.
Here is a split we suggest, as a starting point you can adjust to your own gaps:
- Core data concepts: about 28% of your study time.
- Analytics workloads: about 28%.
- Relational data: about 24%.
- Non-relational data: about 20%.
These are our recommended weights, not Microsoft's — the percentages above are the exam's; the time split is ours to help you plan. If you already write SQL or work with Azure Storage day to day, shift hours away from what you know and toward what you don't.
The four free official learning paths
Microsoft publishes four free learning paths on Microsoft Learn that line up one-to-one with the four exam areas. They are the cleanest free way to cover the blueprint, and they map neatly onto the weighting above. Study them in this order:
The core data concepts path (2 modules). Start here. It teaches the foundations the rest of the exam builds on: how data is represented (structured, semi-structured, unstructured), common file formats, transactional versus analytical workloads, and the roles of database administrator, data engineer, and data analyst. Short, but do not skip it.
The relational data path (2 modules). This covers relational tables and keys, why we normalize data, the main families of SQL statements, and common database objects — then the Azure side: the Azure SQL products and the managed services for open-source engines like MySQL and PostgreSQL.
The non-relational data path (2 modules). The smallest area by weight. It spans Azure Storage — Blob, Files, and Table storage — and Azure Cosmos DB: when to choose it, and the range of APIs it supports.
The analytics path (3 modules). Save this for last — Microsoft's own path lists the first three areas as things you should understand first. It covers large-scale analytics (ingestion and pipelines, analytical data stores, Azure Databricks and Microsoft Fabric), the difference between batch and streaming, and data visualization in Power BI. The naming is the quiet trap. DP-900 does not ask you to configure anything — but it does expect you to know which service does which job. Azure SQL Database, Cosmos DB, Azure Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, and Power BI each own a slice of the picture, and the questions reward telling them apart. Reading is not enough; you need to recognise the names cold.
One freshness note in your favour: Microsoft refreshed the skills list on 21 July 2026, and its own change log marks every difference as minor or no change. So the four areas and their weightings above are stable — a plan built on them now holds after the update.
Practise, then work down your weak areas
Learning paths get the material into your head. Practice questions tell you whether it stuck. Once you have read a path, switch modes: answer questions, then read the explanation for every one — the ones you got right included, because a lucky guess is not knowledge.
The loop that works is simple:
- Take a set of questions under quiet, timed conditions.
- Review every answer, not just the wrong ones, and note the topics that keep tripping you.
- Go back to that module, re-learn it, and try again.
- Repeat until your weak-area list is short and your score sits comfortably above the pass mark.

A realistic timeline
Here is the honest part: Microsoft publishes no official study time for DP-900, so anyone promising a fixed number is guessing. We will not tell you to "pass in three days." What we can offer is a realistic read, owned as our opinion, from building the DP-900 question bank.
- Already working with data or Azure: two to three weeks of steady evenings is usually enough to close gaps and get exam-ready.
- Some IT background, new to data services: three to five weeks, giving the two heavy areas — core concepts and analytics — extra time.
- New to cloud and data: five to six weeks or more, learning the foundational concepts first before the analytics material.
DP-900 is a Beginner-level exam with no hands-on tasks, which makes it approachable. The challenge is breadth, not depth — a wide field of Azure service names to keep straight. Study to a score you can repeat, not to a date on the calendar, and book the exam once your practice results are consistently comfortable.
