PL-900 Exam Guide: What Power Platform Fundamentals Covers, Format, and How to Pass

PL-900 is the entry certification for Microsoft Power Platform: a 45-minute, proctored exam covering the business value of the platform, Dataverse and governance, Power Apps, Power Automate, and — since 24 July 2026 — agents built in Copilot Studio. You need 700 to pass, there are no prerequisites, and the certification never expires.

What PL-900 covers

Microsoft revised the outline on 24 July 2026. The five skill areas and weightings, quoted exactly as published on the study guide:

Two things are worth noticing about that shape. First, four of the five areas sit in the same 20-25% band — there is no dominant topic to carry you. Second, the agents area is new: it did not exist before July 2026. If a study resource has no chapter on Copilot Studio agents, it predates the current exam and is missing roughly a fifth of it. Format, score, and what the 45 minutes feel like

The exam runs 45 minutes and is proctored. Microsoft notes it may include interactive components. The certification page lists it as Beginner level, tagged to the App Maker role.

You pass at 700. That figure comes from Microsoft's scoring page, and the detail people miss is that it is scaled, not a percentage — 700 is not "70% correct".

Microsoft does not publish a question count. Plenty of sites state one confidently. We would rather tell you it is unpublished than invent a number: you have 45 minutes, and the honest planning assumption is that you will not have long per item.

The exam is offered in twelve languages, including English, Spanish, German, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Russian, Italian, Arabic (Saudi Arabia), and both Simplified and Traditional Chinese. Price is set by the country or region where you sit it, and appears on the registration page.

Who it is for, and what you need first

Nothing. There are no prerequisites. Microsoft's own framing is that candidates want to understand how Power Platform technologies build tailored business solutions, work with data through Dataverse and connectors, apply AI-powered features in Power Apps, automate with Power Automate, and create agents with Copilot Studio.

It is also not a prerequisite for anything else — Microsoft says it can be used to prepare for role-based certifications but is required for none. That makes it a genuine starting point rather than a gate: useful if you are a business analyst, a maker, a career-changer, or an IT professional who keeps meeting Power Platform and wants the vocabulary to hold a conversation about it.

Does it expire?

No. Fundamentals certifications do not renew, per Microsoft's renewal policy. Role-based associate and expert credentials need annual renewal; this one does not. Worth knowing when you compare the cost against a certification you will have to maintain every year.

How to prepare

Microsoft publishes a free learning path of six modules, refreshed on 22 July 2026 alongside the exam update. It also offers a free practice assessment and an exam sandbox that lets you try the question formats before exam day. Use all three — they cost nothing and they are the current material.

Where practice questions earn their place is in the gaps between modules: the distinctions the exam actually tests. A lookup column against an intersect table. A formula column against a rollup column. An agent flow against a generative response. Canvas against model-driven. Those are decision skills, and reading about them is not the same as being asked.

Is it worth it?

Honestly: it depends on why you want it. As proof of deep skill, a Fundamentals certification is not that, and nobody should claim otherwise. As a structured way to learn a platform that has spread across a great many organisations — and now carries a full domain on AI agents — it is a good use of a few weeks. It is also cheap, does not expire, and gives you a shared vocabulary with the people already building on it.
