How to Study for SC-900: A Weighted Study Plan

How do you study for SC-900? Match your hours to the exam's weightings. The Microsoft security solutions area is the biggest slice at 35-40%, so it earns the most of your time; the concepts area is the smallest at 10-15%. Work through the four free official learning paths in order, then test yourself with practice questions until your scores hold steady.

Put your hours where the marks are

The single biggest mistake with a fundamentals exam is spreading your time evenly. SC-900 is not weighted evenly, so your study should not be either. Microsoft splits the exam into four scored areas, each with its own percentage band:

• Microsoft security solutions — 35-40%. Clearly the largest area. Extra time here does the most for your score.
• Microsoft Entra — 25-30%. Identity is the second-heaviest area.
• Microsoft compliance solutions — 20-25%. A solid quarter of the exam.
• Security, compliance, and identity concepts — 10-15%. The smallest area, but everything else builds on it.

Notice that the top two areas — security solutions and Entra — together make up roughly two-thirds of the exam. A plan that gives them two-thirds of your study time is already aligned with how you will be scored.

Here is a split we suggest, as a starting point you can adjust to your own gaps:

• Security solutions: about 35% of your study time.
• Microsoft Entra: about 28%.
• Compliance solutions: about 22%.
• Core concepts: about 15%.

These are our recommended weights, not Microsoft's — the percentages above are the exam's; the time split is ours to help you plan. If you already work with Entra or Purview day to day, shift hours away from what you know and toward what you don't.

The four free official learning paths

Microsoft publishes four free learning paths on Microsoft Learn that line up one-to-one with the four exam areas. They are the cleanest free way to cover the blueprint, and they map neatly onto the weighting above. Study them in this order:

1. The concepts learning path (2 modules). Start here. It teaches the foundations the rest of the exam builds on: the shared responsibility model, Zero Trust, defence-in-depth, encryption and hashing, and the identity basics — authentication versus authorization, identity providers, and federation. Short, but do not skip it.

2. The Microsoft Entra learning path (4 modules). Entra is Microsoft's cloud identity and access platform, and this is a heavy area. You will cover identity types, authentication methods and multifactor authentication (MFA), access management with Conditional Access and role-based access control (RBAC), and the protection and governance tools such as Privileged Identity Management.

3. The security solutions learning path (5 modules). This is the largest exam area, so give it the most attention. It spans Azure infrastructure protection (Azure Firewall, DDoS Protection, network security groups, Bastion, and Key Vault), Microsoft Defender for Cloud, Microsoft Sentinel for SIEM and SOAR, and threat protection with Microsoft Defender XDR. 4. The compliance learning path (4 modules). This one centres on Microsoft Purview and Microsoft's privacy principles: the Service Trust Portal, Compliance Manager, data classification, sensitivity labels, data loss prevention, records and retention, plus insider risk, eDiscovery, and audit.

The naming is the quiet trap. SC-900 is a describe exam, so it does not ask you to configure anything — but it does expect you to know which Microsoft product does which job. Entra, Defender XDR, Purview, and Sentinel each own a slice of the picture, and the questions reward telling them apart. Reading is not enough; you need to recognise the names cold.

One freshness note in your favour: Microsoft refreshed the skills list on 28 July 2026, and its own change log marks every difference as minor or no change. So the four areas and their weightings above are stable — a plan built on them now holds after the update.

Practise, then work down your weak areas

Learning paths get the material into your head. Practice questions tell you whether it stuck. Once you have read a path, switch modes: answer questions, then read the explanation for every one — the ones you got right included, because a lucky guess is not knowledge.

The loop that works is simple:

1. Take a set of questions under quiet, timed conditions.
2. Review every answer, not just the wrong ones, and note the topics that keep tripping you.
3. Go back to that module, re-learn it, and try again.
4. Repeat until your weak-area list is short and your score sits comfortably above the pass mark.

A realistic timeline

Here is the honest part: Microsoft publishes no official study time for SC-900, so anyone promising a fixed number is guessing. We will not tell you to "pass in three days." What we can offer is a realistic read, owned as our opinion, from building the SC-900 question bank.

• Already working with Azure or Microsoft 365: two to four weeks of steady evenings is usually enough to close gaps and get exam-ready.
• Some IT background, new to these services: four to six weeks, giving the two heavy areas — security solutions and Entra — extra time.
• New to cloud and security: six weeks or more, learning the foundational concepts first before the product-heavy areas.

SC-900 is a Beginner-level exam with no hands-on tasks, which makes it approachable. The challenge is breadth, not depth — a wide field of product names to keep straight. Study to a score you can repeat, not to a date on the calendar, and book the exam once your practice results are consistently comfortable.
