How to Study for AZ-700: Plan by Weighting, Not by Week Count

Microsoft publishes no preparation time for AZ-700, and we will not invent one. It publishes where the marks are: five areas with weightings, a 100-minute exam, and 700 to pass. Build the plan from those weightings, then from the parts of the outline the free learning path leaves you to learn elsewhere.

Five plans, five different answers

We read the first page of results for "az-700 study plan" in August 2026. It offered a four-week plan, a six-to-eight-week plan, an eight-week plan, an eight-to-twelve-week plan and a twelve-to-sixteen-week plan. Not one of them cited a source for its number, because there is no source to cite. Microsoft does not publish a preparation time for this exam.

That spread is not a sign that four of the five authors got it wrong. It is a sign that the question is missing its most important input. How long AZ-700 takes depends on how much of the job you already do, and a page written before you arrived cannot know that. So a stranger's calendar is the one part of a study plan that carries no information at all.

What can be planned honestly is the shape of the work: which topics deserve the most hours, which ones the free material will not teach you, and how you will know you are ready. Those three things are knowable, and the rest of this article is those three things.

What Microsoft publishes that a plan can stand on

Three facts survive scrutiny, and all three are on official pages.

The five areas carry published weightings. The study guide sets out the skills measured as of July 27, 2026, and gives each area a band rather than a fixed number.

The exam runs to a clock. The certification page allows 100 minutes and says the session is proctored. It also warns that interactive components may appear, and those take longer than a multiple-choice question.

The pass mark is 700. Microsoft's scoring page scores technical exams from 1 to 1,000, and 700 passes. It also says the score is scaled, so it is not the same as scoring 70% of the points: an easier set of questions needs more points, a harder set needs fewer. Nothing is deducted for a wrong answer.

Turn the weightings into hours

Here is the first table a plan should be built from. The weightings are Microsoft's. The sub-bullet counts are ours, taken by machine from the published skills list while we built our own AZ-700 material, and the hours column is ours too.

The hours column takes the midpoint of each band and shares out ten hours in those proportions. That is a device of ours. Microsoft publishes ranges, not points, so treat the column as an order of priority rather than as an instruction. The order itself is safe from the rounding: under every reading of the bands, core networking is the largest claim on your time and private access is the smallest.

Now look at the two middle columns together, because they do not agree.

Connectivity services holds 38 of the 136 sub-bullets — more of the outline than any other area — for a band that tops out at 25%. Private access holds 10 bullets, 7% of the outline, for a band that starts at 10%. Take the midpoint of each band and a private-access bullet is worth about twice what a connectivity bullet is worth, on a fraction of the material.

Two practical consequences follow, and they are ours:

  • Private access is the cheapest domain to finish. Ten bullets covering private endpoints, Private Link service, DNS integration and service endpoints. Cover it completely and early. It is the one area where "I know all of this" is a realistic sentence.
  • Connectivity services is where the hours disappear. Site-to-site VPN, point-to-site VPN, ExpressRoute and Virtual WAN are four large subjects inside one band. Plan it as four blocks of work, not one.

The free learning path is 6 hours 29 minutes, and that is the trap

Microsoft's official AZ-700 learning path holds eight modules. Its own learning catalogue publishes the minutes and the unit counts below. They add to 389 minutes and 68 units.

The right-hand column is our mapping, and it is approximate on purpose. Two topics sit across the line: distributed denial-of-service protection is a core-networking bullet that the path teaches inside its security module, and virtual network flow logs are security bullets taught inside the core-networking module.

389 minutes is 6 hours and 29 minutes. A reader who takes that as the preparation time has been misled by a true number.

Here is what we measured. In August 2026 we read all 68 units of that path and judged every one of the 136 published sub-bullets against them. One rule was applied: a bullet counts as taught only when a unit teaches the operation or the decision its verb asks for, not when a unit merely names the topic.

Of the 87 bullets that remain, 60 are named without the task being taught, 6 get a passing mention, and 21 are never mentioned at all.

The important part of that table is not the 36%. It is that the figure barely moves between areas — 30% at the low end, 42% at the high end. A gap concentrated in one module would be a scheduling problem you could solve by reading that module twice. A gap spread evenly across all five is a structural property of the path, and it means every area needs material from outside it.

One piece of arithmetic tempts everybody here, and it is wrong. If 6.5 hours covers 36%, then 18 hours covers the whole outline — but that only holds if the 87 uncovered bullets are the same size as the 49 covered ones, and they are not. Several of them are among the largest subjects on the exam. We measured the coverage. We did not measure the hours, so we will not print an hours figure we never took.

The 21 topics the free path never names

These are the ones to schedule deliberately, because nothing in the official path will remind you they exist. Eleven of the 21 sit in connectivity services alone:

  • ExpressRoute, four of them: route advertisement configuration, encryption over the circuit, Bidirectional Forwarding Detection, and attaching a virtual network to a circuit.
  • Point-to-site VPN, four more: the VPN client configuration file, client-side and authentication troubleshooting, Always On VPN requirements, and Azure Network Adapter requirements.
  • Virtual WAN: choosing a scale unit per gateway type, and deploying a gateway into a hub. Plus Azure Extended Network on the site-to-site side.

The other ten fall in three areas:

  • Core networking, six of them. Subnet delegation, custom IP address prefixes, and virtual network connectivity through Azure Virtual Network Manager. Then the three Microsoft Defender for Cloud bullets: Secure Score recommendations, attack path analysis, and Cloud Security Explorer.
  • Application delivery, one: inbound NAT rules on a load balancer.
  • Network security, three. Creating an application security group, attaching one to a network interface, and setting up a network security group for remote administration through Azure Bastion.

Private access is the only area where the path at least names every bullet. That is a second reason to treat it as the one you finish first.

Where to go instead is not a matter of opinion. The study guide carries its own documentation list under "Study resources", and it names 19 Azure documentation roots for this exam — ExpressRoute, Azure DNS, Virtual WAN, Route Server, Load Balancer, Application Gateway, Front Door, Traffic Manager, NAT Gateway, Azure Firewall, Web Application Firewall, Azure Monitor and Private Link among them. Microsoft chose that list for AZ-700. When a bullet is missing from the path, the page you want is nearly always in that list, and we built our own question bank the same way.

Adjust for your starting point, not your calendar

The study guide's audience profile is the honest gate on all of this. It asks for subject matter expertise, meaning you already plan, build and run Azure networking solutions. It also expects you to have created and operated networking, storage and compute resources in Azure. Three fundamentals should be in place before any of that: network address management, name resolution, and network protocols. The learning path adds its own entry conditions, including comfort in the Azure portal and with Azure PowerShell.

So instead of a week count, here is what changes for four common starting points. What changes is the shape of the plan, not a number we made up.

  • You run Azure networks today. Your plan is mostly the 87 bullets the path does not teach, plus the clock. Start from the outline itself rather than from the path, and use the path only where you find a gap.
  • You are an Azure generalist, at roughly AZ-104 level, without deep networking. Treat connectivity services as a separate project with its own hours. It is 38 bullets, four large subjects, and the area where the free path leaves the most unnamed.
  • You are a network engineer new to Azure. The vocabulary transfers and the resource model does not. Peering is not a routing protocol here, and a route table is an object you attach to a subnet. Do the portal and PowerShell work early; the learning path lists both as things you should already have.
  • Neither Azure nor networking is your day job yet. We will not give you a schedule. This exam is written for people already doing the work, and no calendar substitutes for that. Build the missing skills on a real subscription first, then everything above applies to you.

Hands-on, because the outline is written in verbs

We counted the opening verb of each of the 136 sub-bullets. Configure leads 28 of them, Create 21 and Implement 14. That is 63 bullets — nearly half the outline — that describe something you build rather than something you know.

That count changes how the hours should be spent. Reading about a health probe teaches you the words. Configuring one teaches you which field it goes in, and what fails when it is wrong. The exam is proctored, allows 100 minutes, and may include interactive components. So speed on tasks you have actually performed is worth more than one more read of the same pages.

Our own working rule, from building this material: for every hour on a Configure or Create bullet, do the thing once in a real subscription. Delete it afterwards.

How to know you are ready, instead of counting weeks

A week count is only a guess at readiness. Use the real signals instead.

Take the free practice assessment. The study guide and the certification page both link one for AZ-700. It is a readiness check and not a syllabus, so use it to find weak areas rather than to predict a score.

Spend half an hour in the exam sandbox. Microsoft links it from the same pages. It shows the question types inside the real interface, and the content in it is not AZ-700 material. Do it early so nothing about the screen is new on the day, and do not count that half hour as practice.

Practise against a clock. 100 minutes is the whole budget, and interactive items use it up faster than multiple choice.

Then use this test, which is ours. For each of the five areas, say out loud which service you would choose for a given requirement and why the other candidates lose. Load Balancer against Application Gateway against Front Door. Service endpoint against private endpoint. Site-to-site VPN against ExpressRoute. Network security group against Azure Firewall. If you can do that without looking, the reading has worked. If you can only recall what each service is, it has not.

Book the exam on the signals, then plan for the renewal

Two logistics worth settling in advance rather than on the morning.

The exam is offered in ten languages, English among them, and the study guide says you may ask for an additional 30 minutes when the exam is not available in your preferred language. Ask before you book. And if it goes badly, the certification page allows a retake 24 hours after a first attempt, with longer waits after that.

Then the part most plans stop before. This certification runs for 12 months, and renewing it is free. The renewal assessment is unproctored and open book, it is shorter than the exam, and you may retake it as often as you need within your six-month window. Budget an hour a year for it. That is the cheapest line in the whole plan and the one people forget.
